Not Just Hearers but Doers

On Sunday nights each Home Fellowship is discussing the book of James. In James 3 we find instruction, correction, and exhortation. Instruction to not elevate ourselves into a position of teaching without being called and equipped by God – knowing we shall receive a stricter judgment. The position comes with a great responsibility to allow our actions to speak louder than our words - not just a “hearer” of the Word so it can be regurgitated, but a “doer” of the Word (James 1:22). Our words and actions need to line up with each other. In James 3, we need to confess that we all stumble in many things, and words spoken carry a lot of weight. The tongue can instruct, correct, exhort, and encourage or it can condemn, discourage and pass judgment. “Out of the mouth proceed blessings and cursing ought my brethren, these things not to be so.” Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words can destroy someone or lift someone up. Proverbs 25:11 says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.”
