How do you respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit?
The Bible shows us 2 very different responses to the gospel yet describes them in the exact same way. Acts 2:37 "Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, 'Men and brethren, what shall we do?'" To "cut to the heart" means that they were smitten in heart with poignant sorrow. Being filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter led about three thousand to the Lord that day.
Acts 7:54 "When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth". In this text, Stephen was waiting tables and when he was falsely accused of blasphemy, he shared the gospel message. When his accusers heard the message, they were "cut to the heart" but it means to be sawn through mentally, i.e. to be rent with vexation.
How do you respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit? In both stories, the hearers were extremely uncomfortable with what was presented to them, yet the responses are polar opposites. When you sit in church and listen to the message, are you "cut to the heart" at all?
