We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord.

“We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not just please ourselves. We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord.”

Romans 15:1-2

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such there is no law.”

Galatians 5:22-23

These verses have stirred up my heart with what I feel is an important challenge. In this political climate I believe we are all faced with a temptation to be defensive or even offensive when faced with views opposing to us. As I look on social media and listen to conversations around me I see and hear a lot of anger and aggression. The first reaction to differing views is often to be upset and retaliate.

I believe God has issued us a challenge in these verses. We can not compromise on the truth, but it is also important how we speak with and relate to people. God calls us to be considerate of one another and build them up. The fruit of the spirit includes gentleness, patience, kindness, and peace. Elsewhere scripture calls us to be slow to anger.

I believe the Lord is calling me, and all of us, to speak the truth; but to speak the truth truly in love. May we seek the Lord for the strength to truly relate to those who we don’t agree with in Love so that He may be glorified through us.
