“ And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.
When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “this is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.”
But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.”
This is likely a familiar story to most of us. Jesus was moved with compassion seeing the needs of the people. He met their spiritual needs, and the story ends with Him providing for their physical needs also. God is the great provider, and He is always faithful!
But as I read this story this time something else stood out to me.
It was Jesus’ response to the disciples: “You give them something to eat.”
He gave them a calling, an instruction. To provide for these people was completely outside of their ability, but completely within Jesus’ abilities. When God calls and leads us in life, He is the power and the provision that backs up what He calls us to do. He will never give us a call that He is not going to fulfill His portion of! Because He is faithful, and as we obey Him and walk in His Spirit, we will see His provision and partake of it, and help bring it to others!
